Winterberry Gardens has extended its reach into Maine with the acquisition of Willie C. & Sons Landscaping LLC, marking the latest growth step for the Southington-Connecticut-based landscape design and maintenance company since it took on private equity backing in 2024.
The companies said the deal for the Topsham, Maine-based landscaping firm closed earlier this year, March 24. Terms were not disclosed.
Willie C. & Sons provides residential and commercial property maintenance, design and construction. Following the acquisition, the companies confirmed that Nick Cloutier, the company’s president, will remain with the business.
For Winterberry, the acquisition adds a foothold in Maine to a presence that already spans much of New England. Founded in 1985, the company employs roughly 175 people and offers landscape design and installation, irrigation, lighting, lawn care, fertilization and ongoing property maintenance for residential and commercial clients, as well as golf-course irrigation work.
Winterberry is actively hiring following the acquisition. Scot Leavitt, the owner, stated:
“If you have a great attitude, are driven, and want to work for a company that has a wealth of opportunities, you are who we want to hire.”
The acquisition transaction comes after a shift in Winterberry’s ownership. On Oct. 1, 2024, the company became a portfolio company of Gemini Investors through a recapitalization.
Gemini Investors, based in Wellesley, Massachusetts, targets lower middle market companies and has invested in more than 180 businesses across sectors including business services, consumer products, manufacturing and health care.
