Google Commits $50 Million to Skilled Trades Training

2026-06-15 10:22 am

Google has announced a $50 million commitment from Google.org to expand training and apprenticeship opportunities in the skilled trades, aiming to help prepare more than 300,000 American workers for high-demand careers across more than 20 states. The funding will go directly to the training experts who build these programs from the ground up, supporting 14 labor unions and four trade and contractor associations as they modernize coursework, integrate AI tools, and scale apprenticeship readiness initiatives. The investment is part of Google's ongoing strategy to address the nationwide shortage of skilled tradespeople and to ensure workers have the state-of-the-art skills and accreditation needed to pursue careers in the trades.

Building and maintaining the infrastructure for America's future requires a coordinated workforce of skilled tradespeople. Welders, plumbers, electricians, HVAC, and fiber technicians will be the ones powering advanced network grids. Hundreds of thousands of skilled trade roles are currently open across the U.S., waiting to be filled, and the new Google.org funding aims to help close that gap. The investment supports several flagship initiatives: TradesFutures, an organization created by North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU), will scale placement from apprenticeship readiness programs into registered apprenticeships nationwide; the Electrical Training Alliance (etA), formed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), will pilot a mobile training center to reach high-demand infrastructure hubs; the United Association's International Training Fund (ITF), in partnership with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), will develop a five-year roadmap for the plumbing, HVAC, and refrigeration sectors; and the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry, backed by SMART and SMACNA, will modernize coursework and implement new AI tools to support apprentices.

With this commitment, Google is reinforcing its long-term focus on workforce development and expanding access to high-wage careers across the U.S. The investment builds on prior Google.org funding that has supported the Electrical Training Alliance (etA) in training tens of thousands of electrical workers and the Manufacturing Institute in equipping current and future manufacturing workers with essential AI skills. Speaking about the impact of the initiative, Maggie Johnson, Global Head of Google.org, stated:

"No single entity can solve this American workforce shortage on its own. There needs to be engagement across industry, civil society and government, so we can build modern on-the-job training and expand apprenticeships together. By supporting the training experts and trade organizations who keep America running, we're helping build a public-private model to prepare the next generation of American builders."

The funding is being deployed through Google.org's AI Opportunity Fund, which supports organizations using AI and technology to expand economic opportunity. Today's commitment is the latest step in Google's broader investment in skills training: since 2022, the company has provided more than $1 billion globally in training and skilling initiatives, helping over 100 million people gain essential digital and AI skills.

Google.org is the philanthropic arm of Google, dedicated to using technology, funding, and expertise to support nonprofits and social impact organizations addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges. The AI Opportunity Fund focuses on equipping workers, students, and communities with the AI skills and resources needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.

The $50 million commitment underscores Google's continued focus on workforce development and its efforts to support a public-private model that prepares the next generation of American tradespeople, ensuring the doors to a thriving economic future remain open across communities nationwide.
