Core States Group, a national architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) firm, has successfully acquired Hurley & Stewart, a Michigan-based civil engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture firm. The acquisition expands Core States Group’s Midwest operations and reinforces the company’s continued strategy of combining nationwide A/E/C capabilities with local market knowledge to support clients expanding their physical footprints across multiple states and municipalities.
Founded in 2002 by Todd Hurley and Tim Stewart, Hurley & Stewart provides civil engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture services across multiple markets and project types. The firm is headquartered in Kalamazoo with an additional office in Grand Rapids, and has built its business primarily in Michigan over more than two decades of operations. Hurley & Stewart has developed a strong reputation for technical expertise and a collaborative, trust-based culture that has supported long-standing client relationships throughout the region.
With this acquisition, Core States Group is deepening its regional presence in the Midwest while expanding its ability to serve national clients with consistent project delivery across multiple markets. The addition of civil engineering, surveying, and landscape architecture resources in Michigan supports both regional assignments and multisite national accounts, while giving Hurley & Stewart’s team access to Core States Group’s broader multidisciplinary capabilities and national operating footprint. Speaking about the impact of the acquisition, D. David Dugan, President and CEO of Core States Group, stated:
“As our clients continue to grow across the country, they need partners who understand the unique requirements of the communities where they operate. Hurley & Stewart strengthens our regional presence in the Midwest and expands our ability to support national programs while delivering the local insight that creates real value for our clients.”
The transaction brings Core States Group to more than 650 employees and 26 offices across the United States and Canada, further scaling its A/E/C platform as it continues to serve national multisite clients and major projects across the country. Dugan also pointed to the cultural fit between the two organizations as a key driver of the deal, remarking:
“What attracted us just as much as their technical expertise was the culture Tim and Todd have built together. They’ve created an impressive business founded on partnership, collaboration, and trust.”
Hurley & Stewart’s principals said joining the larger platform is expected to create additional resources and career opportunities for employees while expanding the range of services available to existing clients. Reflecting on the new chapter for the business, Todd Hurley, Co-Founder of Hurley & Stewart, remarked:
“Joining Core States Group represents an exciting next chapter for our people. We’re incredibly proud of the team and culture we’ve built at Hurley & Stewart, as well as the relationships we’ve developed with our clients and communities.”
Tim Stewart, Co-Founder of Hurley & Stewart, added that the combination will give the Michigan team access to multidisciplinary expertise and additional professional development opportunities while allowing the business to offer clients more comprehensive project capabilities:
“This partnership allows us to build on our foundation while creating new opportunities for our people and expanding what we can deliver for our clients.”
