While this isn't a merger or acquisition, this announcement does effect the home services industry as whole. Apple is setting up to allow advertising in Apple Maps, but they will be barring ads for home services such as plumbers, locksmiths, and HVAC providers. The launch of search-linked ads is coming to the United States and Canada in summer 2026.
The restriction appeared in Apple’s "Policies for News, Stocks, Maps, and Sports Programming in Apple Advertising Services." The policies were published on July 14, 2026 and I'll breakdown what this means in the paragraphs that follow.
Apple said ads tied to "Home Services" will not be allowed. The specific clause is 2.13.
2.13 Home services: Ad content that contains or directly or indirectly promotes home services — including but not limited to plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, or general contracting services — is prohibited.
Of course, home services aren't the only categories blocked. See 2.14, 15, 16 block other industries from advertising as well. Bail bond services related to pretrial release in criminal cases, and cryptocurrency ATM advertisements are blocked. Medical services ads, meanwhile, will be "evaluated on a case-by-case basis", indicating they will be reviewed individually.
Policies 2.7 - 2.12 also have prohibited or case-by-case industries.
As a whole, the policy in review applies across Apple’s first-party apps, including: News, Stocks, Maps, and Sports, and offers one of the clearest early signals about how Apple plans to run advertising inside Maps.
Technology media outlet TechCrunch highlighted the importance of the home services decision, writing that "this is where Apple draws a clear line against Google, which dominates the local services ad category", and analyzing that the policy suggests Apple intends, at least initially, to limit ads to businesses with physical storefronts that customers visit.
TechCrunch also said Apple’s design "could help make the ads feel more like natural map information rather than traditional paid search ads." The outlet further reported that by excluding businesses such as locksmiths and garage door repair companies, where verification can be difficult, Apple "saves itself the headache as it begins to scale its advertising business on Apple Maps."
Google allows these home service categories but subjects businesses to initial screening and periodic audits, while Apple has chosen to keep them out of its advertising inventory altogether.
Apple Maps ads are planned to appear at the top of search results and in a new in-app feature called "Recommended Spots." Ad placements will be marked "Ad."
Apple said Maps search results will show users just one ad placement. Businesses that are advertising will have a small blue halo around their pin, and their advertising status will be clearly shown in the "Recommended Spots" list.
The company also said data on user interactions with ads will stay on the device, and that Apple will neither collect nor share that data with third parties.
As alluded to above, the broader policy also bans deceptive or profane ads, political advertising, and content involving weapons, violence, controlled substances, or defamation.
According to some reports, future updates to Apple’s advertising services terms may indicate the company plans to open ad inventory in Apple-made apps to non-Apple services as well. Although Apple has not officially confirmed that point.
Since Apple first announced the Apple Maps advertising business in early 2026, details on timing and operating rules had remained undisclosed. Now, with the publication of the policy, attention in the digital advertising industry is increasing as Apple moves closer to its summer launch. Looks like our home services businesses won't get an opportunity here, at least not yet.
